| ANGELOS SIKELIANOS 2001 – 50 years since his death 2001 marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of Alexandros Papadiamantis, and the 50th anniversary of the death of Grigioris Xenopoulos and Angelos Sikelianos. To honour the authors, the Ministry of Culture and EKEBI decided to host a series of events and activities in collaboration with the anniversary events organising committee set up for that purpose. The committee chairman was Professor Nasos Vagenas, University of Athens, and its members were Stavros Zoumboulakis, manager of Nea Estia journal, Georgia Farinou-Malamatari, Prof. of Modern Greek Literature, University of Thessaloniki, Eliza-Anna Delveroudi, Asst. Prof. of History of Theatre and Film, Theatre & Music Studies Section, Dept. of Philology, University of Crete, Vicky Patsiou, Asst. Prof. of Modern Greek Philology and Children’s Literature, University of Athens, Konstantinos Koroulis, Director of the Literature Directorate of the Ministry of Culture, and Christos Lazos, Director of the National Book Centre. The secretariat was Despina Moraiti, from the Ministry of Culture's Literature Directorate, and Angeliki Papanikolaou, National Book Centre special consultant. EVENTS A. 3-day conference in Lefkada A 3-day conference was organised in Lefkada from 9 to 11 August 2001 in collaboration with the Lefkada Studies Centre and attended by specialist scholars. The conference was part of the events organised by the City of Lefkada to mark the Sikelianos Year and was opened by Nasos Vagenas, chairman of the organising committee. B. International Academic Conference in Cyprus This conference was jointly organised with the School of Philosophy, University of Cyprus from 16 to 19 November 2001 addressed by 31 speakers from Greece, Europe and Australia. C. Workshop on Sikelianos and the Theatre. The Dept. of Theatre Studies /University of Athens and EKEBI organised the workshop in December 2001 under the supervision of Nasos Vagenas. It was addressed by around 10 speakers and its proceedings were published. The event was accompanied by screenings of archival film footage.
PUBLICATIONS To mark the 150th anniversary from the death of Sikelianos, the following books were published with the support of EKEBI and the Ministry of Culture: Holy Bread: a selection of poems made by the poet himself, edited by Kostas Bournazakis, Ikaros Press. Declaration of Heroism, 1909, the poet’s first lecture hitherto unpublished, edited, annotated and commented on by Kostas Bournazakis, Ikaros Press. Because deep inside I was grateful illustrated volume EKEBI published a 56-page illustrated volume about Angelos Sikelianos. It was edited by Nasos Vagenas and the layout designed by Vasso Avramopoulou. The illustrated book includs a detailed timeline of the author's life, a full list of his works, an anthology of his literary works, documents, manuscripts, publications and photographs. The literary journals Nea Estia and Diavazo were also subsidised to publish issues dedicated to Angelos Sikelianos.
Mobile Exhibition EKEBI created a mobile exhibition on the life and work of Angelos Sikelianos. The exhibition consists of 13 panels with a wealth of photographic material, information on his life and works and the covers of books. It is available from EKEBI for use at events organised in the author’s honour in Greece and abroad.
