RAMSES II EURO-MEDITERRANEAN NETWORK OF RESEARCH CENTRES IN HUMAN SCIENCES

RAMSES II is an International Research Network in social sciences and humanities, which includes 33 research institutions from within the Euro-Mediterranean area.

It is part of the European Research Policy (FP6) and is funded by the European Commission for a four year period (total budget: €3.4 million).

The network and its actions are coordinated by the Maison Mediterraneenne des Sciences de l’Homme in Aix-en-Prevence (France).

The goals of the programme include:

  • Creating a Euro-Mediterranean research area and promoting collaboration between research centres in Europe and the Mediterranean.
  • Improving research in order to develop a new field of Mediterranean Studies.
  • Encouraging the translation and publication of books in Human Sciences from countries in Europe and the Mediterranean.

The publishing and translation sector:

EKEBI coordinates the publishing and translation activities of the RAMSES II network, and arranges the following:

  • Creating a network of Human Sciences publishers and translators from the Euro-Mediterranean area.
  • Organising annual meetings of publishers at the International Book Fair of Thessaloniki.
  • Publishing and translating a Euro-Mediterranean collection of books from Human Science disciplines.
  • Organising translation seminars.

Finance for RAMSES II comes from:

  • The EU Research and Development Community Framework Programme (FP6 και FP7)
Framework Programmes are the main instrument used by the European Union to fund research and technological development.
  • The 6th Framework Programme (FP6) ends at the end of 2006, and has a total budget of €20 billion for the period 2003-2006.
  • The 7th Framework Programme (FP7), as already determined by the Commission, will be the main method for funding research and development during the period 2007-2013. FP7 is one of the most important methods of realising the Lisbon Strategy for development and competitiveness. It is meant to promote the creation of a European Research Area, and contribute to the growth of the economy and the knowledge society of Europe.
