Nikos Engonopoulos (2007) – 100 years since his birth 
 
2007 marks the centenary of the birth of Nikos Engonopoulos, whose work is one of the cornerstones of Greek modernism. Acknowledging him as an important author who left his mark on the world of Greek art in the 20th century both in the field of painting and poetry, the Ministry of Culture and EKEBI decided to celebrate this anniversary and established an organising committee comprised of experts to prepare a schedule of various events to shed light on his work and bring the general public into contact with it. To implement the programme EKEBI collaborated with other bodies and organisations such as the Benaki Museum, the Athens Concert Hall, the Athens School of Fine Arts and the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art.
 
The programme of events and activities is outlined below:

Love Is the Only Way… 
February 2007 published by EKEBI edited by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Professor, Francesa Ambatzopoulou. The book includes a timelime, anthology of poetry, studies, articles and testimony about the poet and painter, and a rich collection of photographs and is also useful to all those who are familiar with Engonopoulos' diverse work and those who are coming into contact with it for the first time.

Exhibition, Engonopoulos 2007: The Beauty of a Greek
20 February – 20 April, Athens International Airport, dedicated to the life and work of Engonopoulos as part of the Athens International Airport cultural programme.

Performance dedicated to Nikos Engonopoulos
16 March, Athens Concert Hall, dedicated to his works directed by Giannis Kakleas, with a selection of texts made by Nasos Vagenas. This was a joint production of the Athens Concert Hall and EKEBI, as part of the Megaron Plus series of events. It was a charming journey into the world of the poet using mixed media to highlight the dreamlike aspect of Engonopoulos’ paintings and a dramatized presentation of his poetry with actors, dancers, and other performers to place on a modern stage the entire range, power, humour and sensitivity of his work.

2007 World Poetry Day campaign
19 March – 21 April. This campaign organised each year by EKEBI to mark World Poetry Day was dedicated to the poems of Nikos Engonopoulos in 2007. In cooperation with Attiko Metro, the Athens International Airport, TRAM S.A. and the Municipality of Athens as well as with the assistance of the Hellenic Railways Organisation, Athens trolley and train and inter-city bus companies, the verses of Engonopoulos travelled around the city reminding us that poetry is not just something for the few. The artwork was prepared by students from the Athens School of Fine Art.

Exhibition, Place: Engonopoulos
18 May – 29 July, Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, a thematic and exploratory exhibition focused on this painter and poet presenting the advance made by his work which introduced a surrealistic perspective into the story of modern Greek art.  It brought together a series of outstanding works by the painter and put them side by side with a series of works by more recent artists without seeking to establish any continuity, unity, school or style in terms of artistic approach. The exhibition was curated by Denis Zacharopoulos assisted by Nicky Loizidis and was one of the events held as part of the 4th Thessaloniki International Book Fair. 
 
Conference: Engonopoulos 2007: the poet and painter
23-24 November, Benaki Museum, Pireos Branch, a two-day academic conference jointly organised by EKEBI and the Benaki Museum with the support of the Ministry of Culture. The conference was attended by researchers studying Engonopoulos from Greece and abroad and its proceedings will be published in an endeavour to provide a new overall assessment of his work.

Art exhibition ‘I am a painter and a poet’
13 November 2007-6 January 2008, Benaki Museum
Pireos Branch, A large retrospective exhibition organised by the Benaki Museum to present a full picture of his painting works and to outline his career as a poet. It included representative works from his five decades of artistic output, surrealist composition, views of houses, icons, set designs, costumes, book illustrations and his published works of poetry. The artistic side of the exhibition was curated by Katerina Perpinioti-Angazir and its poetic side by Thanassis Hatzopoulos. The design was by Lilly Pezanou. Regional events
In order to encourage the hosting of events about Engonopoulos in the provinces, EKEBI has a mobile exhibition dedicated to Nikos Engonopoulos comprising panels featuring his work, biographical data, book covers, photographs, and other archive material accompanied by films on his life or inspired by his work which is available to interested parties such as bookshops, schools, cultural centres, modern Greek studies centres, public libraries, reading clubs, and so on.
The anniversary celebrations marking 100 years from the birth of Nikos Engonopoulos  were implemented with the support of the organising committee comprising experts in the literary and artistic work of Nikos Engonopoulos.
