Filippos Filippou’s latest novel, The Man That Women Loved, draws on a number of literary genres to combine romance, crime, suspense, gastronomy, the cosmopolitan life and travel. During an idyllic Black Sea cruise, a woman who writes romantic novels falls in love with investigative journalist Tilemahos Leontaris. On their return to Athens they plan to write a book together, but reality intervenes in the form of murder when a young woman is killed in an Athenian hotel. The surprises keep coming in a mystery complicated by a large cast of characters, from stockbrokers and freelance professionals to cuckolded spouses and femmes fatales. While glancing at Nabokov’s Lolita, the poetry of Byron’s poetry, and the art of writing, Filippou explores the consequences of crime for lovers and jealous individuals in a crime story about the high life. He delivers a meaty plot, well-crafted characters and caustic humor in a satisfying read.
