A woman wastes away, consumed by anorexia nervosa and alcohol abuse, as she struggles to deal with the memory of her father, a Nazi collaborator who persecuted Jews in wartime Thessaloniki.
She meets a man who is filled with disappointment and bitterness, also haunted by the memory of his father, a leftist. Each of them caught up in their own deranged world, the couple makes no pretence of communication. Gradually they come to resemble the image in Rembrandt’s painting, The Jewish Bride.
This is a novel about both the trauma of the holocaust, which remains unhealed while so many of the guilty go unpunished, and the trauma of the civil war, which oversahdowed Greek society till the late 20th century.The author does not use history to put his defeated characters on stage, but to enable the death rattle of the sanitized, guilt-free present to be heard through their voices.
