Steeped in history, beloved of artists and writers, the Saronic Gulf and its islands reveal their charms from a new perspective in a volume of aerial photographs. It’s a richly varied feast: the pinewoods of Angistri, the thermal waters of Methana, red-roofed stone buildings clustered around the almost circular port of Hydra, the temple of Aphaia on Aegina, a lighthouse perched on a rocky outcrop of Salamina, a Byzantine monastery in Ermioni, whitewashed chapels, marinas crammed with yachts, a fishing boat ploughing a furrow of foam in a sparkling sea, rocky islets, isolated coves, an ancient shipwreck, the little theatre of Epidaurus, the Corinth canal and the teeming port of Piraeus. Thanasis Vassiliou sets the context in an introduction and captions, and has selected extracts of poems and prose inspired by the Saronic to accompany the striking photographs taken by Yiannis Yiannelos and Eleftheria Kroustali and drawn from the publisher’s archives.
