The Greece of Takis Tloupas is a treasure trove of photographs by a talented cameraman, all of them a testament to his love for the Greek landscape and people. Almost 600 photographs document the land, customs, occupations and rituals. Inevitably, as traditional ways fade, much of his work preserves scenes that are on the verge of disappearing. Humble, handmade lookouts and dovecotes on the plains of Thessaly, stone bridges describing elegant arcs over secluded streams, backbreaking work in idyllic surroundings, collective labour at traditional tasks, a fisherman gazing at a dried-out lake – this is Tloupas’s Greece. Among this rich collection are images that have attained iconic status. His cherubic child in a hood against the snows of Metsovo counterpoints the hooded figure of an older man, whose weather beaten face radiates a tranquillity and optimism that were surely shared by the photographer who immortalised him and the land that sustained them both.
