Ioli Vingopoulou was born in Istanbul in 1956. She studied at Athens Law School, and did a doctorate at the Sorbonne. Since 1987, she has worked at the Institute for Neohellenic Research. She specializes in travel literature (texts and illustrations), local history and historical and cultural geography and has published widely on Modern Greek social history and culture. Her main field of work is a research programme and database of travel literature in South-Eastern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean in the 15th-19th centuries, of which she is the scientific coordinator.
