Café Lukács: Budapest Noir
 Kostas Kalfopoulos

120pp.
Agra, 2008
ISBN13: 978-960-325-776-9

Budapest, August 1989, shortly before the Berlin Wall is breached. A Greek journalist who has just arrived for a conference meets an attractive woman and spends a night of passion with her. The following day, she is found dead and he is in deep trouble. Two more killings follow and the police soon connect all three crimes to clashes between groups hunting down Nazis as war criminals and others protecting them. The author sustains an electric atmosphere in an evocative urban setting, infusing the narrative with his love of cinema, literature, classical music and metropolitan perambulations. His hero is a man of solitary temperament, seemingly given over to inner contradictions and impervious to external pressures. Kostas Kalfopoulos links historical personages such as Nazi-hunter Simon Wiesenthal with a fictional plot that comments on Europe’s short twentieth century. His novel revives the political and social side of crime fiction, adding the arts of evasion and insinuation.
