In the unadorned prose that is his trademark, Dimitris Nollas tells of the horrendous obstacles facing migrants who risk death in their struggle to reach Europe. A woman trying to slip into Europe illegally survives a shipwreck off the coast of an island somewhere in the Mediterranean, only to meet her death later in a fall from a rock. The dual meaning of her death is central to the novel: does the accident in which she dies symbolize her rejection by Europe with its wealth and prosperity, or does she commit suicide because she cannot endure any more suffering? Her death reveals the wretched living conditions and mental state not only of the foreigners, but also of the locals that sometimes share their fate. Castaway Creatures tackles the treatment of outsiders without becoming didactic or resorting to melodrama, in a narrative that is eloquent in what it leaves unsaid.
