The Journey: The Greek American Dream 1890-1980
 Maria Iliou

249pp.
Benaki Museum, 2008
ISBN: 978-960-847-885
ISBN13: 978-969-98174-0-0

The images may be familiar, but the black and white photographs in Maria Iliou’s The Journey: The Greek American Dream 1890-1980 can still pack a punch. They represent a fascinating combination of private moments that also form part of a larger, collective history. The photographs trace the Greek migrant experience in America from the mass departures that followed the failure of the currant harvest in Greece – as historian Alexandros Kitroeff explains – through the days of struggle, integration and the reassertion of Greek identity. Eloquent images show migrants traveling in steerage, encountering Ellis Island bureaucracy, toiling in mines and factories, but also building communities and celebrating Greek customs while making their own American dream come true alongside the other migrants whose hopes and determination helped build their new country. Gleaned from fifty different archives in the United States, the pictures were taken by both amateur and professional photographers.
