How does a city live in the shadow of a multicultural past that goes back thousands of years? How does one of the world’s most populous cities function in a place where different cultures, religions and ethnic groups mix and, every so often, clash? There is a perception that the minorities living there experience the city as having declined from its former grandeur, but Konstantinos Antonopoulos’s photographs show that the Constantinople of the Byzantines, Sultans, Ottomans, Venetians, Greeks, Jews, Armenians and other ethnic groups is livelier than ever. Istanbul today has everything, from the most exotic elements of the East to state of the art technology. This volume is anything but a superficial approach. It explores the city from the viewpoint of everyday life, people and cultures that survive in the present, of gazes that meet in the street as they look anxiously and expectantly towards the 21st century
