Tassos Denegris (1934-2009) was born in Athens. He had already published his first poems in Strofi magazine when he studied cinema and social sciences at the University of Rome. He was on the editorial board of Pali magazine. His first book, Death in Kaningos Square, came out in 1974. In 1975 he was invited to participated in the Iowa International Writing programme, and frequently read his poems abroad at universities and festivals in Europe, India and Latin America. He was actively involved founding the Greek Writers’ Society in 1983. In addition to five volumes of his own verse, he also published translations of verse and prose by writers such as Octavio Paz, Jorge Luis Borges, John Dos Passos and Michael Longley.
