The first in an ambitious series that will cover archaeological sites throughout Greece, Archaeology:The Aegean Islands is a superbly illustrated compendium of information. Editor Andreas Vlachopoulos has enlisted the help of 46 contributors, all but two of them Greek, to present the latest archaeological news from the Aegean Islands. The books surveys archaeological activity in the region since the nineteenth century, emphasising finds and conclusions from the past twenty years. An overview of archaeological activity in the Aegean by Christos Doumas, who leads the Akrotiri excavation on Santorini, is followed by sections on the northern and eastern Aegean, the Sporades, the islands of the Argosaronic Gulf, Kythera and Antikythera, the Cyclades, the Dodecanese and Crete, with a final chapter on the Aegean as an underwater museum. Expert contributors, superb photographs commissioned for this publication and impeccable presentation make this a remarkable volume. It will soon be available in English and German translations.
