Denegris published just five books in a poetic career spanning some 56 years. He belonged to a dynamic and radical modernist group of Greek writers influenced by the subversive writing movements of the sixties and particularly by the beat generation, though in contrast to the voice of the beat poets, Denegris’s voice is tender, allusive and calm. His language is everyday, unadorned, anti-lyrical, but always clear and penetrating, unpredictable and daring. He characterized his own work as “wanderings in the urban and natural landscape, personal life, moral and aesthetic dilemmas that lend it significance and their own thematic gravity, perhaps more so than any influences from other poets”. His previous collected poems, Instantaneous, published in 1985, is characteristic of his poetics, with its attempt to instantaneously perceive the fluid and fleeting meaning of things, to record that fragment of reality that still contains a grain of truth.
