On the day of the archbishop’s death, publicly mourned by the state and on television, a monk in a seaside monastery experiences a humbler but no less intense drama. When his pet dog dies, Vikentios loses his entire universe. Attempting to revive her puppies, he looks back in pity on his own life, one of continual deprivation and the abbot’s harsh oppression. After many years, he finds himself utterly alone, obliged to run an empty monastery. No external event – not the death of the archbishop, the social obligations of the monastery or changes in the country and the world – can allay the fear of loneliness which leads a crazy dance in his mind. In the astutely crafted character of his hero, Yiannis Makridakis portrays the defeat of the collective by the individual at a time where the collective is in decline.
