Christos Boulotis spins a charming tale of a music-loving alley cat that values his independence but is tempted to visit a house where he hears the piano being played. He leaves his little clockwork mouse outside, in case the people in the apartment opposite his old haunt in Smolenski Street balk at two uninvited visitors. Before long, Cat and Mouse have made friends with Lele the piano teacher, her daughter Maro, also a teacher, and grandfather Demos, who talks to them from his photograph in Maro’s room. The friends share a life of music, dreams, reminiscences, Russian phrases and good food. Fotini Stefanidi’s illustrations beautifully render a world of fantasy where Maro blows such big bubbles with her bubble gum that they lift her off her feet, a cat can play the piano at the Athens Concert Hall, and people and cats can live on after death in talking photographs.
