Having survived reclamation projects in the past, the wetlands of Greece now face damage from pollution, unprocessed waste, thirsty irrigation systems and ruthless land grabbing. Land reclamation expert and amateur photographer Giorgos Fatouros spent ten years photographing almost 300 lakes, lagoons, marshes and wetlands for Lakes: A Photographic Journey in Greece. In this compendious but accessible volume, he records their haunting beauty while outlining their geography, history, flora, fauna and environmental status. Evocative photographs come with captions recounting the myths connected with each site. One example is the story of the Stymphalian birds. Reared by Ares, the fiercely aggressive birds inhabited the lake that bears their name until Hercules destroyed them. The lake escaped a more prosaic fate when an 1881 drainage project failed. It is now home to a rich ecosystem and is listed in the Natura 2000 network as a significant area for the birds of Greece.
