Emmanouil Roidis
 Pope Joan, Issue No 8

Emmanouil Roidis, one of Greece’s most important nineteenth-century writers, was born in 1836. When his best-known book, Pope Joan, first came out in 1866 it was denounced by the church and its author was taken to court. He died in 1904.

(Dimitris Kalokyris’s Modern Greek translation of Pope Joan - the original is in Katharevousa Greek - has been published by Ellinika Grammata. ISBN: 960-442-040-2).
