Costas Balafas
 The Islands, Issue No 3

Costas Balafas was born in Kypseli, Arta, a mountain village in Epirus. His parents were farmers. He began taking photographs in 1930 in Giannena, where he spent the war and took part in the resistance of 1941-1944. He published his photographs recording the armed resistance to the occupation in Resistance in Epirus. He began working for the Public Power Corporation in 1951 but spent most of his time on photography. Influenced by the harsh conditions of his boyhood and the struggle for liberation and dignity, his photographs focused on social issues. He has walked the length and breadth of Greece, recording what he has seen in photographs.
