Sophia Rizopoulou was born in Athens in 1954. She studied biology at Athens University where she completed her doctorate. She also acquired research and teaching experience at universities abroad (in Germany, England, Portugal, Kuwait and the U.S.). She has won Fulbright, DAAD and European Union scholarships. She has written numerous articles on plant biology. Rizopoulou is assistant professor of biology at Athens University.
