Emmanouil Marmaras was born in Athens in 1947. He studied architecture at the National Technical University of Athens, from which he graduated in 1972 and gained his doctorate in 1986 for a dissertation on town planning. In 1993 he received a doctorate from the University of Leicester. He teaches in the University of the Aegean’s geography department, of which he was head in 2002-2004. He is President of the History of the City and Town Planning Association for 2003-2006. He has published many articles in Greek and foreign journals and in the daily press.
