Nikos Themelis was born in Athens in 1947. He attended the German School of Athens – the Doerpfeld Gymnasium. He studied law at the University of Thessaloniki, and after completing his military service continued his studies in Germany, where he wrote his doctoral thesis in 1975 on European communities. He worked for the Agricultural Bank, the National Economy Ministry and the legal services of the Council of Ministers in Brussels. From 1981 he worked with former Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis, following him to the ministries of Labour, National Economy, Education and Industry and then served as advisor to the Prime Minister from 1996 to 2004. He has published papers on issues related to European enlargement. In addition to politics and sciences, his interests include painting, music and literature.
