Wasted Money
 Yiannis Varveris

47pp.
Kedros, 2005
ISBN: 960-04-2830-1

The solitude of the body is driven to its existential limits in Wasted Money, a collection of poems by Yiannis Varveris, where death is concealed behind boredom, routine dejection and depression.
Individual circumstance is depicted here as a hermetically sealed-off arena, where there is no provision for receiving, accepting or welcoming the other.
Its extreme internal tension has the effect of making the verse both intensely dramatic and ironic. The language, crafted with an artful dryness, raises the temperature, lending the poems great immediacy.
Highly abstract and distilled in the extreme, these poems are set in a restrained lyrical landscape that converses with many voices from the Greek and European poetic past.
The poems move from relentless sarcasm and constant changes of identity to one single poetic hero-narrator, who, while doing his best to control his passions, does not wish to mask his ongoing emotional upheavals.
