Pantelis is the only child on a tiny island in the Aegean. Alone at school, with his games and his dreams, Pantelis longs to go to sea at the helm of a ship. When he asks Nikolas, a sailor, how he can become a ship’s captain, the old salt tells him he must first learn the secret of the sea. So he starts asking around, but everybody has something different to tell him, their answers reflecting their own way of looking at the world: “Only the mermaids know,” says his teacher with a laugh. “The sea’s secret is its pebbles and driftwood, its clams and starfish,” says Ilias, who paints pebbles. In the end Pantelis, budding captain, asks the sea itself. Costas Magos' picture book captures the wonderment and curiosity of childhood, while Michalis Kountouris's illustrations show Pantelis's world of sea and sky as seen from the perspective of a child.
