One of Greece’s most noteworthy contemporary poets deploys irony, self-mockery and an atmosphere of ambivalence in her new collection of verse. How the Assyrians Commit Suicide comprises scores of very brief poems, plus ten ‘stories set to music’.
Confined in a hermetically sealed space from which any hope of escape is illusory and, trapped starved of meaningful contact with others, the individual is crushed by the millstone of their own inner isolation, caught in a trajectory that can offer no guarantee of survival.
Words turn to crystal, to jagged glass in these poems, while images parallel their heterogeneous fragments without disturbing their deeper unity. Individuals move from illusion and dream to fairytale in poetic stories that arrive at their terminus, having already blown up the place from which they set out. The poet’s expressive skill has fashioned a book that possesses an underlying music of its own.
