For his latest novel, Dimitris Nollas draws on the history of the Left in Greece and elsewhere in Europe, using press reports from the 1990s to explore past and present manifestations of Greek terrorism. As it delineates the psychological profiles of fictional protagonists in successive generations, Anyone’s Time shows how political crime can morph into a murderous mechanism that merely apes the system of power that it opposes. The book lays bare the conflicts, the mutual suspicions and the aggression at the core of a group that has lost all trace of any ideological basis and given itself over instead to mindless violence. Their existence bereft of meaning, ruled by fear and a sense of betrayal that dictate their every action, the characters give in to destructive and self-destructive urges.
This story of the passions that destroy the latest crop of activists is infused with an intensely poetic element.
