It is hard to distinguish between genuine and virtual reality in The Opponent by Costas Katsoularis, where dark forces prowl the Internet in a strange and dangerous power game. The Web is portrayed as a grim place, filled with a vast array of advertisements, countless pornography sites, discussions between people who will probably never meet one another, relentless mutual spying, and the murky intentions of those hiding behind impersonal web addresses.
The story zeroes in on the Kafkaesque dimension of the Internet and the danger of digital technology being used for totalitarian purposes. Katsoularis employs a range of narrative and linguistic techniques, from the immediacy of theatrical dialogue and advertising to chat room and email style.
The hero-narrator always addresses himself in a restrained monologue. The narration is fast paced and the staccato dialogues convincing. The author keeps one eye on the thriller genre in this book where the subject and visual environment are reminiscent of “Matrix.”
