A golden star lies in a box full of decorations stored in attic, waiting to take pride of place atop the Christmas tree. One by one the other ornaments are removed, but when a boy reaches into the box for the star, he rejects it because it is faded and crumpled. Discarded with the rest of the household rubbish, the star is mauled by a cat and left to lie in the rain and mud. Then a star it has singled out in the sky responds to its smile with a glimmer, and suddenly a little girl catches sight of the tattered star in the gutter. Natalia treats the star as a treasure, revamping it with new stardust, and keeping it on her desk after Christmas. Eliza Vavouri’s trademark images, which depict the world from the eye-level of a child, draw young readers into Rena Rossi-Zairi’s charming story.
