“The poet shows complete confidence in two inseparable ‘images’ of writing: in the image of thought and in the image created by language. For every poem (even in these days of post-modern scepticism) constitutes an image of some reality. This follows from the word itself, which means that which is apparent. And it also means that which is perceivable through our senses. This, then, is where language and thought meet and the basic concern of poetry is to exist vis-à-vis a reality, which – as we now know – is made up of signs. The relationship between fiction and reality is tending more and more to be reversed. We live in a world of fictions. There is no point in fabricating realities. The meaning now weighs heavy on the intention: ‘Vacation in reality’ and not ‘from reality’.” So the book’s cover introduces the ninth collection by Vlavianos, perhaps the most translated contemporary Greek poet.
