In The Blue Hour by Thanassis Heimonas, the disappearance of a film director draws his brother into a dramatic adventure. Art proves to have grave consequences for life in a world where nothing happens by chance. The author effectively develops his elaborate artistic plot at all levels throughout the course of the action. The main character, forever absent for some undisclosed reason, is described in forceful, eloquent terms as an exceptionally impulsive and contradictory personality. The book verges discreetly on the territory of the crime and mystery genres, and it also has certain elements of the literature of wandering. The action is carefully structured and Heimonas creates a gripping atmosphere with low-key but skillfully deployed language. The author deliberately leaves the ending open to a variety of interpretations, and readers are free to invent one of their own.
