Dimitris Letsios takes us on a visual tour of the land he loves in Journey in the Light and Shade of Greece. His images, mainly black and white, record the scenes he witnessed during decades of excursions to the Greek countryside, in particular the plain of Thessaly. A few colour photographs revel in the interplay of tone and texture. Striking landscapes and their humble inhabitants are photographed in natural light and printed without any tinkering in the dark room. From the formidable rocks of Meterora to the charms of vernacular architecture, a boat perched on the dried-out surface of Lake Karla, and the austere interior of a monk’s cell, Letsios documents the beauties of the world around him. His affection for the ordinary folk who peopled the landscape in the days of pre-industrial agriculture is apparent in portraits of farmers, herdsmen, schoolchildren, weavers and peddlers.
An introduction by Iraklis Papaioannou sets the photographer’s life and work in context.
