Photographer Konstantinos Antonopoulos took these black and white shots during a long trip to China, where he focused on scenes of everyday life. Skirting famous monuments and glamorous new infrastructure, he took his camera into back streets, underground passages and hardscrabble neighborhoods. Most of his human subjects cling to the lower rungs of society, eking out a living. A girl hauls water in tin cans suspended from a shoulder pole. Street sellers display a meager spread of wares. Rickshaw drivers wait for passengers. A man transports gas cylinders and his child in a bicycle-drawn cart. Everywhere there are children – many at work, some at play or in school, all warmly wrapped in padded jackets, self-possessed. Many of the pictures reflect China’s rich ethnic and cultural mix, including Muslims, Buddhist monks and Tibetans in national dress.
