Eight years in the turbulent life and career of rebetika icon Markos Vamvakaris are the basis of Giorgos Skabardoni’s latest novel. The composer idolized his wife Zigola, and they continued to make love even when she was living with his best man and childhood friend. From 1932 to 1940, as Vamvakaris played music in many different places in Piraeus, he and his four-member band began to make their name. The author brings to life the music scene and nightlife of a society that was dominated by fraud and violence. It is a vivid portrayal of the poor, the people on the sidelines, games played in alleyways, the drug scene, and the police pursuing both communists and drug users. At the centre of the story is a woman driven by the need for money and her own sexual urges, and a musician destroyed by her betrayal and devoted to his art.
