Giorgis Pavlopoulos was a poet greatly admired and respected throughout Greece. Born in Pyrgos in the Peloponnese, where he lived most of his life, he cannot easily be classified in terms of the poetic generations or trends often used to characterize poets in the major Greek cities of Athens or Thessaloniki, nevertheless his contribution to post-war Greek poetry is significant. The basic themes of his poetry are drawn from the common well of his generation’s harsh historical and political experience, though his voice is all his own. His friend and mentor, the Greek Nobel-laureate George Seferis, describes his voice as being effective without any ornamentation precisely because his poetry is an expression of depth.
The present collection, published posthumously, exhibits the dark, melancholic, reflective tone characteristic of many of his poems together with the brighter, more optimistic tone found particularly in his love poems.
