The Book That Didn’t Want To Be Read
 Vasiliki Karga
Illustrator: Nikos Koumarias

32pp.
Epomenos Stathmos, 2008
ISBN13: 960-8259-18-18

Imagine a book that doesn’t want to be read. The thought of being handled by children with grubby fingers or sneezed on people with allergies alarms one little book that lives on a shelf in a large library. The thought of venturing forth into the wide world outside makes it shrink away, hiding behind other volumes when the librarian comes round to dust them. Then one day a young customer makes a special request and borrows the little book, which has led such a sheltered life it has never found out what is written between its covers. Yet the shock of the new is pleasant. The book sees sunshine and trees for the first time and feels a fresh breeze. The greatest surprise of all comes when the man sets the book on a stand in a garden, produces a violin, and plays from the score in the little book.
