The four collections included in the present volume constitute Hadjidaki’s poetic output to date; it is an output that is disproportionately small in comparison to the importance of her poetic voice in Greece during the last quarter of the 20th century. Hadjidaki’s poetry combines surrealist influences with references to American beat poetry and rock music, together with the imagery from the modern “mythology” that emerged towards the end of the last century. Part of this “mythology” deals with the changing relationships observed in the new generation. At the same time, her work reflects the social upheaval of the Sixties and Seventies in the West, indirectly engaging in criticism of such issues as the oppression of the prevailing system, the spread of consumerism and the rise of individualism. What energizes these common enough themes is her ever experimental and breathtaking poetic language.
