‘Like a silkworm that spins its own silken thread from what it digests,’ writes Litsa Psarafti, she has re-worked three classic stories for children aged eight and over. The title story tells of a land where, when trouble comes, the people gather in a circle to recite magic words, but now their feet no longer leave the ground as they did in the old days. One day a stranger tempts them with tales of far-off land where life is easier. In the second, two donkeys meet a couple seeking shelter on a freezing night; the woman is about to give birth, but nobody will let the strangers in until they meet a kindly shepherd. In the last story, Simi leaves his drought-stricken village for greener fields. He goes to work for the Unsmiling Prince, who has offered a thousand gold florins to the one who can make him laugh.
