Arson destroys an old house together with the people in it shortly before the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. The police investigation begins promptly, but there are some people who will stop at nothing to prevent it from advancing. Ashes is set amid violence and corruption. Everyone from the police and government and corporate officials to young neo-Nazis and priests is culpable in some way. Crime is engulfing society and nobody seems willing to combat it. Sergios Gakas sets this well-crafted noir in a south-eastern European metropolis that is preparing feverishly for the Games, and where danger and decay are in the air. Moving along at a cracking pace, the tale is told in three voices, each of which puts a different cast on events. The protagonists are an alcoholic lawyer who becomes a detective in spite of himself and a policeman with a pathological propensity for trouble.
