Nikos Leventis is an unobtrusive yet constant voice in Greek poetry and has quietly served his craft for over thirty years. This volume of collected works contains nine selections of poetry, a miscellany of poems and some twenty translations (which he terms “Re-interpretations”) from French and English; all works published between 1971 and 2007, though some work is published here for the first time. What strikes the reader is the immediacy of his poetry together with the richness of his language. He plays in all the keys afforded by the Greek language’s long history: from the Homeric epics and ancient lyric poets to the Greek of the Bible and the medieval romances. It is poetry of an exceptional sensitivity that constitutes a penetrating and often ironic view of Greek reality.
