A group of friends from all over the Balkans converge in a small town in northern Greece. During the three days they spend together, violent disagreements erupt on account of a narrative that each of them interprets according to their perceptions of justice in their own country. A regional calamity is played out among a circle of friends who suddenly seem unable to avoid the national and racial divisions of the past that has left them a legacy of problems that have not achieved resolution, and possibly never will. Historical fantasy has so perverted and distorted historical memory that the collective identity of the heroes outweighs their individual destinies and characters, fuelling passions and sparking implacable hatred. Demosthenes Kourtovik’s latest novel, What the Barbarians Want, addresses national and racial violence without ever raising its voice by adopting the truth of one or the other side, including the Greek outlook.
