The Corn Man
 Dimitris Sotakis

232pp.
Kedros, 2007
ISBN: 960-04-3414-9
ISBN13: 978-960-04-3414-9

Corn is the object of worship for a cult that attracts throngs of believers. But the faithful gradually become alienated from the founder, who proclaims the need for devotion to a new deity, the onion.
The Corn Man is a strange and deeply ironic tale that deals with the absurd manner in which people can fall prey to the most arbitrary and unfounded fantasies. A dramatic comedy, it exposes the reader to the absurdity, not so much of circumstances as of the misfortunes that befall the protagonists.
The author presents the comic as serious so as to reveal a profounder absurdity at the heart of everyday existence. He also employs a measure of political allegory, which depicts power as a force with completely blind and inexplicable sources. And there are elements of fantasy, a literary tradition that Sotakis is never truly done with.
