The Poems contains the total poetic output of Anestis Evangelou, seven published and two unpublished collections. Like many other Greek poets of what is characterized in Greece as the “Second post-war generation”, Evangelou’s poetic voice is generally low-key and confessional. Evangelou is not only a prominent member of this generation, but one of its champions, having published the standard anthology of its representative poets (The Second Post-War Generation of Poets, 1994). Also, like many other poets of this generation, his poetry turns from the external and collective struggles of the immediately preceding generation to focus on a personal struggle with the inner void. The landscape of his poetry is dramatic and dark and the mood despondent, yet Evangelou always manages to insert a flicker of light amidst the gloom, ignited by his deeper faith in the value and meaning of life. Thirteen years after his untimely death, these poems remain remarkably vibrant and, above all, relevant.
