Aphrodite's Left Arm is an archaeological thriller about the ideology of neoclassicism, among other things. In an entertaining, thought-provoking amalgam of fiction, history and essay, Takis Theodoropoulos examines the discovery of a statue dubbed the Aphrodite of Milos by a villager on an Aegean island in April 1820, and the events that led to its removal to France and installation in the Louvre Museum.
Among those involved in the game to acquire the statue are a cadet in the French Navy, a French diplomat, and a confidant of the Bourbon throne who is also a geographer and nature lover.
Drawing on diaries and notes written by the real-life protagonists in the creation of his brilliantly realistic fictional characters, and adding his own thoughts, Theodoropoulos demolishes the myth of ancient Greek harmony, and exposes the idealisation with which that myth was received and enhanced when it was transmitted to Europe after the Middle Ages.
