Vassilis Gouroyiannis examines the plight of people who, through their own fault or not, become victims of the relentless conflicts of time and place. History and its effect on everyday life on both the individual and collective level is the theme of his latest collection of short stories. In From the Other Side, women are subject to the violence of their fathers, migrants struggle to return to their homelands, the elderly nurture fantasies about the war, and youngsters are cheated at football. Some of the characters suffer the cruellest blows of fate without it ever crossing their minds that they have the power to escape. The pain and intensity of fatal conflicts are the stuff of these short stories where Gouroyiannis shows how black comedy and deep, internal drama can be two sides of the same coin. The circumstances are grim, but his writing is always light and unforced.
