With the Breath of Athens and Rome by Takis Theodoropoulos sees the myths, literature and thought of ancient Greece as a constant stimulus for the modern spirit. The classical canon becomes the object of love and desire. Theodoropoulos examines the belief of the Ancient Greeks in their autonomy and the way that people of our time understand and experience the same concepts. The author seeks in ancient Greece a clue that will lead him to a place from which all dogmatism and all guiding authorities are absent. He argues that the fact that the ancient Greeks did not believe in God and did not focus on death provides insight into the extent of their freedom. The defence of the ego and the advocacy of individualism are depicted as forerunners of European thought in a work that looks at the Ancient Greeks free of ideological blinkers and without any intention of presenting them as national values.
