Yannis Kontos’s Death Trainer is a sampler from a thirty-year poetic itinerary that began in the early 1970s in a spirit of questioning all political, social and family stereotypes. His poems reflect the acquisition and consolidation of mature individuality without conceding an inch of ground to the insulation of endless self-observation and pointless self-examination. The poet’s gaze is always directed to the sphere of collective reality, documenting both its expectations and disappointments. There is righteous anger with the real world, which appears in his images in the form of a broken and dismantled skeleton. The only way to deal with such a situation is to turn the despair it provokes into an uprising that will topple all misleading myths. The poet uses various unconnected images for his human figures but also various surreal embodiments for his objects – incarnations that effectively deploy the element of surprise and the unexpected transfer to an unreal and deliberately ill-matched or improper state.
This collector's edition is an anthology of poems originally published by Kedros.
