The Holocaust of the Greek Jewry: Monuments and Memories

338pp.
Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece, 2006
ISBN: 960-86029-3-9

The Holocaust of the Greek Jewry: Monuments and Memories records the Jewish monuments in Greece that survived the ravages of World War II. The monuments include both those that have survived sixty years since the Holocaust and the devastation of Jewish communities in Greece, and those that have been erected since the war in tribute to the age-old Jewish presence in Greece.
Of the 28 Jewish communities that were active in Greece before the Second World War, only eight have managed to re-organize themselves since the Holocaust, when 86 percent of the Jewish population of Greece was wiped out in Nazi concentration camps.
In the aftermath of the war, historically significant monuments that had been damaged by the Nazis were left untended and many gradually fell into disrepair. This book records them for history, offering an insight into Jewish communities and their thriving cultural and social life before the war.
