An Athenian gangster unexpectedly loses the game in a story steeped in death and violence. In Night Ride, Mihalis Mihailidis takes the reader into the world of gun-running, loan-sharks, drugs and prostitution. The novel moves with seemingly effortless skill from mystery to adventure to futurist narrative.
In an ingenious innovation, the narrator not only puts the perpetrator in the role of the victim, but also in the role of the detective – albeit a detective who has lost his memory and can barely articulate a word.
Athens is portrayed as a metropolis of crime, decay and of pervasive, invincible corruption. Through the writer’s grim vision of contemporary Greece emerges a scathing criticism of his era.
This is a universe in which nobody survives, neither those who struggle to defend themselves nor those who strive to dominate.
