The Fruit Trees of Athens
 Sotiris Dimitriou

238pp.
Patakis, 2005
ISBN: 960-16-1812-0

A greengrocer with a poetic outlook on life wanders around the centre of Athens, challenging everyone he meets with his unconventional behaviour. He teases police officers, pelts cats with olive stones and rides the buses without bothering to validate his ticket. In The Fruit Trees of Athens Sotiris Dimitriou unites a series of unrelated events in a single narrative with a common protagonist. The action, which is largely a pretext, centres on the hero’s eccentric behaviour, and is interrupted by the writer’s thoughts as he explains in minute detail exactly how he has conceived his stories. The author strips the mask away from the objective, third-person narrator, displaying the wares in his workshop and exposing his art at the moment of its birth. The language is distilled into a perfect amalgam of oral and written discourse. A light irony permeates this tale, including the writer’s own statements about his work.
